State of the Tidbits 5/7/23
An update about where things stand and what's to come in the future.
I'm breaking away from my usual format for the Substack to update you all about where things stand.
As some of you may know, I previously wrote a young adult trilogy, The Six Pack series, and had an author website dedicated to that. At the time, my weekly writing was posted to the website, usually dealing with topics related to writing, science fiction, comic book geekery and other such topics.
However, the publisher who released my trilogy is no longer in business and, thus, my novels are off the market. Therefore, I have elected not to renew my website and domain name. The latter is already gone and the former will expire in about a year.
I made the switch from the website to the Substack in part because I saw which way things were going — that it didn't make much sense to update a website on a regular basis and pay for maintenance, while it made more sense to have a newsletter to which people could subscribe to read my writings.
I have previously talked about moving more of my posts from the former author website to Substack. I will be sharing one of those posts from my former website in this newsletter and will share more with you in the future.
When I started this newsletter, I wanted to focus on a mix of NFL topics (mainly those related to the salary cap and roster building), sports cards, comic book geekery and issues pertaining to journalism. On the last subject, though, it's becoming clearer that most of the mainstream outlets are moving further away from the concept of "present information and allow the audience to make conclusions from there" and, instead, deciding what information to present and telling the audience what the conclusion is.
I will continue to explore each of these topics but I'm hoping I can touch upon some topics more often than I have done. Mainly, I hope to focus more on the issues in journalism and mainstream media these days.
But I'll continue to look at NFL roster building and salary cap topics quite a bit. One series I have planned is one in which I'll break down each NFL team's roster by looking at how much cap and cash each team commits to each position. I'll examine at what positions the teams rely upon veterans on more expensive contracts and the positions the teams look to rookies on cheap draft pick deals and inexpensive veterans.
I do hope to have a review of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (which I watched last night) in the coming weeks. However, I'll give readers some time to have the chance to see the film, because what I discuss will involve spoilers.
As for sports cards, those posts have decreased mainly because the latest craze has cooled down a bit. At the very least, there are fewer instances of people hoarding retail product. But I'll still try to visit this topic when I can.
For those who follow my Facebook page, I'll continue to provide links to the Substack newsletter there, but I'm looking at ways to tweak the page a bit, given that my young adult trilogy is no longer in publication.
But that brings me to this: I am considering whether or not to offer my young adult trilogy through my Substack. Though I can't say whether or not a young adult audience would be interested in the books and themes in today's environment, I still believe the novels touch upon some important topics, ones that are relevant to this day, even if some may not be aware of why they matter.
In the meantime, I hope that you have enjoyed my writings here and, if you enjoy this newsletter, please feel free to share it with your friends and suggest they subscribe.
As always, thanks for reading.
